Blepharitis

  • Definition: Blepharitis is an inflammation of the eyelids, commonly characterized by red, swollen, and itchy eyelids, along with flakes or crusts around the eyelashes.

  • Causes: The exact cause of blepharitis is often unknown but can be associated with bacterial infections, meibomian gland dysfunction (blocked oil glands in the eyelids), skin conditions (such as rosacea or seborrheic dermatitis), and eyelash mites (demodex).

  • Treatment: Treatment for blepharitis aims to reduce inflammation, alleviate symptoms, and improve eyelid hygiene. This may include warm compresses to loosen crusts, gentle eyelid cleansing with baby shampoo or commercial lid scrubs, antibiotic ointments or eye drops, and anti-inflammatory medications.

In chronic cases, meibomian gland expression to clear blocked oil glands or oral medications may be recommended. Regular eyelid hygiene practices can help manage and prevent blepharitis flare-ups.
